Bento 2

Well, this is my bento for today! It's another sandwich one, only this time it has cheddar instead of Colby Jack. I managed to get the entire sandwich in it this time, don't know what was wrong with last time's. It looks tasty to me. :P

New to bento
Hi! Today I made my first bento! ^_^ I've been interested in making them for a while now, and finally got enough nerve to make one. I didn't make a traditional Japanese one, and I don't have a traditional box, but that's ok. My dad said there might be some cheap bento boxes at our market, so I guess we'll look there next time, and I might get one! I used a plastic tupperware, that was a long shallow rectangle shape. There's a website I think it's justbento.com, where they explain that you can use tupperware or any container for that matter if you can't afford a traditional one, so that's nice.

Today I made a sandwich bento. Sandwich had: sliced cajun turkey breast, colby jack cheese, and a sauce I make with horseradish and mayo, and whole wheat bread. (So, good!) I sliced the sandwich lengthwise and filled half my bento with it. I saved the rest of the sandwich for next time.

On the top quarter of it, I made a salad. Salad: mix of greens (like spinach, lettuce, etc.) and some honey mustard vinaigrette. That was tasty too.

The last quarter was apple slices and chunks. I separated each section by lettuce, I don't need that plastic expensive stuff. That way I could also eat the dividers. Plus, it kept the dressing from going into the sandwich and apples. It was really nice. I forgot to take a picture of it, but maybe next time. ;) It's a fun way to have lunch.

Spicy Peanut Chicken & Fruit Salad in new Maneki Neko box

My personal bento blog at cgpbento is going to take a while to catch up, since I got so backlogged with gear finds and lunches to post, and have so far been failing at my goal to post every other day or so.. So, I figured I'd take a break to pop in at the communities with my first lunch packed in one of my new boxes. >^_^<

I bought this Maneki Neko (Japanese lucky cat) box from LuckyShipper.com on ebay, since I stumbled across it and could not resist. -- I used to look for cat bento boxes, but always had a hard time finding any designs I thought looked good. -- Yay new box! >^_^<

In this lunch I have spicy peanut sauce chicken bites, packed with iceberg lettuce for presentation and extra veggies (tough to find iceberg lettuce with enough color, but it's what I've been in the mood for). The lower tier has a pink heart cup of broccoli with a tiger pick, a little fruit salad of frozen blueberries and strawberries mixed with fresh grapes, and a fish cup with butter for the broccoli.

I have a second photo behind the cut, showing the box packed up in my Chococat lunch bag where you can see the adorable Maneki Neko some more. It's packed with a plastic Hostess Cupcake cup full of cherry cordial Hershey kisses, and a fork in a shortened toothbrush holder. >^_^<

Extra photo behind this cut!Collapse )

I got these sets from Laptop Lunches. The first one is my husband's.

What is in it: salami, watermelon & grapes, Italian Potato Salad, Ritz, and cookies. This one is mine.

Mine has turkey instead of salami and just potatoes from the salad.

Dried bean curd cubes?
Today my husband and I went to a Japanese delicatessen in Amsterdam to get some goodies and -hopefully- a bento as well. But although we didn't succeed in that last part we *did* buy a lot of Japanese snacks, toppings and bite size stuff.

One of the things we bought is a package of Misuzu dried bean curd cubes. It looks a lot like this picture on the KGrocer website but mine have funny faces on them as well ;)

There's one problem... I have no idea how to prepare them! The instructions are in Japanese :( Well, it does say in a table
  • 1 something ~ 150 ml ~ 600w 5 minutes / 500w 6 minutes
  • 2 something ~ 250 ml ~ 600w 6 minutes / 500w 7 minutes

  • So I guess I can rehydrate them in the microwave in a few minutes but that only makes me partly wiser. Does it mean 1 or 2 servings? 1 or 2 cubes (probably not)? And should I use hot water or dashi? DOES ANYBODY KNOW? That would be of great help to me! :)

PS. Is it OK to post something like this in this journal???

    Hi everyone!
I have joined this group a short while ago and have mostly been lurking because I have to figure out how this group-thing works ;) I might have some questions about that for you later on. But for now: my bento #5!

    Bento 5

The picture isn't too great because I was in a real hurry this morning, but it gives you the idea. What is in it?

    • boiled egg

    • salad of romaine, beans, broccoli, radish

    • cherry tomatoes

    • pesto and balsamic dressing (hiding in little container)

    • roasted hazelnuts

    • little cheese-balls with herbs and olives

    • fresh basil leaves

    • fennel crackers

    • nectarine parts (on the side) mixed with a little lemon juice and honey

    • organic yogurt (on the side)

    • carrot (on the side)

Except for the side dishes and the crackers I threw everything together to make a big, healthy salad. It was great!

Hopefully tomorrow we have time to go to Amsterdam to check out this big Japanese shop... I have only a bento box for myself and of course my husband needs one too!

My very first bento!! Well, I've made up plates of mixed goodies, but never made it look nice. It was actually dinner, but time is relative, right? It took me longer than expected, around 45 minutes, but it was 20 minutes of searching for sprinkles and random food items. I wish I could make lunches during the school year, but I would have to keep so much food in my microfridge, it wouldn't work. I'm going to try making simple stuff though ^__^

    So here it is:

    Free of everything? Still tasty!
Just as a reminder, I'm on the low fat, low carb, low sodium, gluten free "diet"ary restrictions. I make almost everything from scratch, but I just can't give up my kimchee, so the most sodium in the following is from that.
My naturopath wants me to go as much on the vegetarian bent as I can. Being as I have pernicious anemia (B12 deficiency) I'm sticking with one meat dish a day at least (plus supplements)... this is not one of them.
    This is lunch tomorrow.
